With a population of over 107,000, Basingstoke is a major town in Hampshire in the south of England. It is found close to the source of the Loddon River and it lies 30 miles from Southampton and less than 50 miles from London.

One of the strongest points about life in Basingstoke is that the town is very well connected across the United Kingdom. This means that it is handy for commuters but it is also a great place to stay if you want to enjoy local life but escape to new pastures with a minimum of fuss and effort.

Lying close to the M3 motorway and with a number of train options, it is possible to be within central London within an hour. With further links across the south east of England and the rest of the UK, Basingstoke is a town that is well connected to the rest of the nation.

With respect to the local economy, Basingstoke is one of the many areas across the United Kingdom that has seen the nature of its economic hub change considerably. The area is now the home of many IT and telecommunication companies, as well as welcoming many international corporations. The handy proximity to the south east of England, London and the many airports that serve these general areas ensures that businesses are happy operating from Berkshire. This means that Berkshire is able to boast of a low unemployment level and many studies indicate that the area provides a great standard of living for local residents. The outskirts of the town hosts a number of business parks and the town is not too far away from the Hampshire cost. With borders with Surrey and Berkshire, Basingstoke is close to many great cities and centres but there is plenty to see in the historic town. When it comes to entertainment in Basingstoke, there are museums such as the Living History Museum and the Willis Museum and Milestones. For live entertainment there is The Anvil and Haymarket Theatre. There is also the chance to catch up on local history with a number of Roman towns in close proximity, such as Silchester and Aldermaston. There is also the chance to shop at a weekly market which has been running since the thirteenth century. The product range has updated but there is an opportunity to enjoy a more traditional way of shopping if the modern shopping centre in Basingstoke isn’t to your taste.

Basingstoke transport options

The main railway in Basingstoke offers services to London Paddington and London Waterloo, with these journeys taking less than half an hour. There is also the opportunity to enjoy train services to Reading, Southampton, Bournemouth and Winchester.
